Tropical Storm Alfred Batters Australia’s East Coast with Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

Tropical Storm Alfred has hit Australia’s eastern coast, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. The slow-moving storm has caused power outages, flooding risks, and severe coastal damage.

Although Alfred weakened to a tropical low on Saturday, its impact remains strong. Hundreds of thousands of homes in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales lost power due to fallen trees and damaged power lines. Authorities warn that flooding is still a major concern.

Flooding and Coastal Erosion

A 61-year-old man was found dead after being swept away by floodwaters near Dorrigo, NSW. Coastal erosion has caused severe damage, with waves carving cliffs up to six meters (19 feet) high. Hervey Bay recorded 230mm (9 inches) of rain in just three hours on Sunday, worsening flood risks.

Military Accident During Storm Response

Emergency teams, including the Australian Defence Force (ADF), were deployed before the storm hit. On Saturday night, 13 ADF personnel were injured when two military trucks crashed near Lismore while clearing storm debris.

Even after being downgraded, Alfred continues to bring dangerous conditions. Authorities urge residents to stay alert and follow emergency updates.
